Nushka Mavrides

Patient Overview
Nushka Mavrides, a 13-year-old sterilised female Pekingese, presented in a severely compromised condition. She showed multiple systemic and neurological signs, including loss of appetite, chronic weight loss, depression, weakness, intermittent vomiting, and pain. She held her head low, cried when walking up steps, and had a painful abdomen. Clinical examination also revealed a sensitive back and slight delayed proprioception in the left hind limb.

Diagnosis and Initial Condition
Nushka was diagnosed with hepatic disease, with ultrasound findings suggesting a likely cancerous process, described as a “moth-eaten” appearance of the liver.

At presentation:

• Very poor overall condition
• Significant pain and discomfort
• Declining quality of life
• Euthanasia had already been recommended prior to acupuncture intervention

Treatment Approach
A dry acupuncture protocol was initiated to support pain management, improve systemic function, and enhance overall wellbeing.

Treatment plan:

• Weekly acupuncture sessions for the first 3 sessions
• Thereafter transitioned to monthly maintenance treatments

The focus was on improving comfort, appetite, energy levels, and supporting organ function as far as possible.

Progress and Response to Treatment
Nushka showed a remarkable response following the start of acupuncture:

• Improved appetite and general engagement
• Reduced signs of pain and discomfort
• Increased strength and mobility
• Improved overall demeanour and quality of life

Despite the severity of her underlying condition, her response exceeded expectations.

Outcome
Although her condition was considered terminal at the time of initial presentation in July 2024, Nushka experienced a significant extension in both lifespan and quality of life, living for approximately another year following the start of treatment.

Conclusion
Nushka Mavrides’ case highlights the powerful role acupuncture can play in palliative care. Even in advanced, likely cancerous conditions, acupuncture can significantly improve comfort, extend quality life, and provide meaningful additional time for both the patient and owner.
